A walk in the Saturday's big, colorful open market in the city of Xanthi is more than a must, where someone can buy things that you could not imagine that still exist! One of the biggest traditional settlements of Greece, the Old City of Xanthi has kept all the architectural characterisitcs of the past... Of course a visit to Pomakochoria - a group of isolated villages with indigenous population should not be missed. Last but not least is a visit in the abounded villages of Kromniko and Livera, overlooking the Nestos meanders.
The Open Air Market in Xanthi
The Open market of Xanthi is the best way for travelers to discover the beauty of this multicultural area! The flee market is held every Saturday in teh center of the city of Xanthi and although the history of the market dates back to the Ottoman period, still remain almost unchanged! Slightly through the years the market as for some years was selling only fruits and vegetables and for some years used as livestock market. Also the market up to 1920 was held every Sunday in the central square of the city.

The central square of Xanthi
The central square in the city of Xanthi, was first designed in 1870 and was completed in 1880. The main characteristic of the square is the huge clock that is a meeting point for the locals, where they enjoy walks and coffee in the many coffee shops!
Folklore museum of Xanthi
The Folklore Museum of Xanthi was founded originally by the Progressive Union of Xanthi and at the beginning of the 19th century was expanded at Kaloudi and Kougioumtzoglou Mansions.
The building of the Folklore Museum in Xanthi is a perfect representative sample of the architecture of the last period of the Ottoman empire– after 1830, and visitors can observe except from the magnificent exhibits like silver buckles, textiles and jewelleries. Also there are traditional customs from Sarakatsanous, Thracian and Pontioi tribes. Also the museum has magnificent murals of Bavarians and German artists.
